  10.   This is a new sub-column in the
  11.  
  12. regular COMAL Corner section of
  13.  
  14. LOADSTAR.  It's purpose is to present
  15.  
  16. summaries of the "Let's Talk COMAL"
  17.  
  18. conferences that occur every Thursday
  19.  
  20. night starting at 10 PM Eastern Time
  21.  
  22. on the PlayNet Information Service.
  23.  
  24. These sessions are moderated by
  25.  
  26. Captain COMAL.
  27.  
  28.  
  29. ============ 18 APRIL 85 =============
  30.  
  31.   Captain COMAL (alias Len Lindsay,
  32.  
  33. promoter of COMAL in the United
  34.  
  35. States) told us the new PlayNet
  36.  
  37. software would soon be available.
  38.  
  39.   Cap reported that the new COMAL 2.01
  40.  
  41. ROM cartridge from Commmodore will be
  42.  
  43. black and have the extra PROM socket.
  44.  
  45.   We talked about 2 bugs that will be
  46.  
  47. fixed in the new version:  WRITEing an
  48.  
  49. entire array at once ('WRITE FILE 5:
  50.  
  51. array()'), and INPUT AT with a field
  52.  
  53. length between 81 and 120 characters
  54.  
  55. inclusive.  Neither of these is sup-
  56.  
  57. posed to work correctly on the COMAL
  58.  
  59. 2.0 EPROM cartridge (tan) from the CO-
  60.  
  61. MAL User's Group.  However, Cap tried
  62.  
  63. the WRITE an array statement on his
  64.  
  65. other C64 with the tan cartridge, and
  66.  
  67. it seemed to work.  Hmmmm . . .
  68.  
  69.   We discussed IBM's forthcoming PC
  70.  
  71. COMAL 2.0, and that led to . . .
  72.  
  73.  . . . The COMMODORE PC-10 computer!
  74.  
  75. A(nother) PC-Clone!  (Remember the CBM
  76.  
  77. BX-256?)  Anyway, you heard it here
  78.  
  79. first!

  81.   Cap mentioned the COMPIS Computer,
  82.  
  83. a European MS-DOS (IBM-compatible)
  84.  
  85. machine with COMAL 2.0 included!
  86.  
  87.   Note:  Before COMAL 2.0 came out,
  88.  
  89. COMPIS wrote a small and fast MS-DOS/
  90.  
  91. CPM version of Pascal that they were
  92.  
  93. going to include with the COMPIS, but
  94.  
  95. after they saw COMAL 2.0, they adopted
  96.  
  97. COMAL and dropped Pascal. What ever
  98.  
  99. happened to COMPIS Pascal?  Well,
  100.  
  101. having no further use for it, they
  102.  
  103. sold it to a small American company
  104.  
  105. called Borland International, who
  106.  
  107. called it Turbo Pascal!  Now you know
  108.  
  109. . . . the REST of the story!

  112.    Also mentioned was MARCA, the lar-
  113.  
  114. gest Commodore show yet!  It will be
  115.  
  116. the last week in July in Valley Forge,
  117.  
  118. PA.  Borge Christensen (inventor of
  119.  
  120. COMAL), Len Lindsay (the Cap), and
  121.  
  122. others will speak.  COMAL User's Group
  123.

  150.   During the last conference Len
  151.  
  152. Lindsay reported that he was retiring
  153.  
  154. as Captain COMAL and someone else
  155.  
  156. would be taking his place. So when I
  157.  
  158. joined this conference, I asked who
  159.  
  160. the new Captain COMAL is.  Well, like
  161.  
  162. Jerry Mathers will always be the
  163.  
  164. Beaver, Len Lindsay is still the
  165.  
  166. Captain!
  167.  
  168.  
  169.   More on the MARCA convention:  The
  170.  
  171. name apparently means 'Mid-Atlantic
  172.  
  173. Regional Commodore Association'.
  174.  
  175.  
  176.   Many people asked how to download
  177.  
  178. COMAL programs via PlayNet.
  179.  
  180. Unfortunately, the current PlayNet
  181.  
  182. File Exchange is intended only for
  183.  
  184. PRIVATE person-to-person exchanges,
  185.  
  186. not public uploads and downloads.  The
  187.  
  188. new PlayNet software (due out Real
  189.  
  190. Soon Now) will have public uploads
  191.  
  192. and downloads -- including COMAL!
  193.  
  194.  
  195.   Other features of the new software
  196.  
  197. are support for Mitey Mo, the VIC-1560
  198.  
  199. (modem/300), the Westridge modem, and
  200.  
  201. RS-232 adapters with Hayes-compatible
  202.  
  203. modems.  Also, non-players in a room
  204.  
  205. can "observe" a game in progress, and
  206.  
  207. the PlayNet Store is active.  A nice
  208.  
  209. touch:  the "PLAYNET" startup program
  210.  
  211. on the disk is now the FIRST program
  212.  
  213. in the directory, so LOAD":*",8,1 can
  214.  
  215. be used to load it.  That means you
  216.  
  217. can use the Commodore/RUN STOP combi-
  218.  
  219. nation from under Epyx's "Fast Load"!
  220.  
  221.  
  222.   We also got into a discussion of
  223.  
  224. ShareWare, wherein a software author
  225.  
  226. uploads his product to several BBS's
  227.  
  228. and information services, and distri-
  229.  
  230. butes several unlocked copies on disk
  231.  
  232. to friends, with instructions to all
  233.  
  234. to "spread it around". People can try
  235.  
  236. out the software for awhile, and if
  237.  
  238. they like it, they send a fee (usually
  239.  
  240. about 1/5th of what a similar program
  241.  
  242. marketed through 'normal' channels
  243.  
  244. would cost) to the author, who then
  245.  
  246. registers them, sends them the latest
  247.  
  248. version, full printed documentation,
  249.  
  250. and a phone number for support!  This
  251.  
  252. means quality software with MUCH lower
  253.  
  254. prices, no copy-protection, no
  255.  
  256. middlemen, etc.
